When we all put together our content marketing strategy, we want it to be some superhuman insight that causes a huge stir among our audience.
At minimum, we think it should allow us some degree of content marketing advantages.
We have visions of it going viral. But in reality, it is often merely visions of sugar plumbs that we see dancing in our heads.
Rather than start a content marketing strategy that has no merit other than to fuel our own egos, we should start with the basics in mind.
Here’s why I think this works best.
The foundation is the starting point
When I was working for an electronic distributor in the late 90s, the training for every new sales rep started with the basics.
It didn’t matter how experienced you were, what your background consisted of, it all started with the basics.
Classroom training to learn the basics of how to sell, not how to sell stuff is where everyone started.
After a full week, I felt I had come to understand the basics of selling. At least according to the results of the training.
After the votes were counted, I was awarded the coveted, “best of class” prize. A Mont Blanc ballpoint pen and case.
I tell you this not to brag, though I am proud of it, but rather to bring up the reason I feel you should stay grounded in the basics.
Attention to the basics
During the training, I took notes based on the basics of the subject. I wasn’t trying to be better than the others in the class, I just wanted to be the best I could be.
This should apply in your content marketing strategy as well. When you get the basics right, the foundation, you can then build your empire.
It doesn’t have to be a huge empire, you can build your business to the level you want. If you want it to be huge, you can when you master the basics.

Content marketing strategy grounded in the basics

We don’t actually need a bunch of new thoughts. We need to pursue and implement the existing thoughts that make sense.
What she is speaking of is basics. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel or build a better mouse trap.
You simply must have a solid foundation. The basics of a content marketing strategy will direct you in how you approach your business.
You either create good content, content that your audience wants and can learn from, or build your business on shifting sands.
Content marketing puts you in control
When you are first starting out, you may think content marketing, blogging and all that “online stuff” is nothing more that an illusion.
It is thoughts such as those which are the illusions. You’re smart enough to understand that people want to know.
They want to know about you. They want to know about your company. They want to know about your products and services.
But most of all, they want to know that you have their best interest in mind. How do you do this?
Content, and especially the basics of content marketing will answer all their questions. Good content will keep them coming back for more.
